Assistant Secretary Brian H. Hook met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal on October 22, 2008. During their meeting, the Assistant Secretary and the Foreign Minister discussed a range of issues, including Saudi King Abdullah's initiative to promote interfaith dialogue, including a related UN meeting to advance that dialogue.

Assistant Secretary Brian H. Hook traveled to New York to participate in the early weeks of the 63rd UN General Assembly. In addition to bilateral and multilateral meetings, the Assistant Secretary engaged the media to underscore U.S. priorities for the new General Assembly, including continued U.S. leadership on humanitarian assistance, democracy promotion, and human rights.

In August 2008, Assistant Secretary Brian H. Hook traveled to Haiti, Costa Rica, and Panama to consult with counterparts and visit UN programs. In Costa Rica and Panama, the Assistant Secretary visited Pan American Health Organization and other UN health-related sites. The U.S. provides approximately 60% of PAHO's funding, supporting a wide range of medical and health programs in Central America.
