EXPERIENCED PROSECUTOR
NEEDED TO SERVE AS RESIDENT
LEGAL ADVISOR IN PRISTINA, KOSOVO


The Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT), Criminal Division, U.S. Department of Justice, seeks an experienced Department Trial Attorney or Assistant United States Attorney to serve as a Resident Legal Advisor (RLA) in Pristina, Kosovo. This assignment is for a term of one year. A possibility for a one-year extension exists, contingent on additional funding. (This is an unaccompanied, reimbursable detail.) It is anticipated that the assignment will begin in the spring of 2008.

This position is for one of two RLAs representing the Department of Justice and OPDAT at the United States Office Pristina. Both RLAs, in coordination with other international assistance providers, implement justice sector reform efforts in Kosovo. This RLA will work within the Kosovo Special Prosecutors Office (KSPO), which handles the most serious criminal offenses involving corruption, organized crime, trafficking in persons, terrorism and money laundering. The RLA will be responsible for advising and providing technical assistance to KSPO prosecutors regarding these serious crimes, and will also provide assistance on other topics, such as plea bargaining, asset forfeiture and financial investigation techniques. The position requires frequent travel within the region.

Applicants must have the ability to function effectively in an international, multi-cultural environment and possess excellent interpersonal and management skills, be mature and self-sufficient, communicate effectively orally and in writing, and possess extensive prosecution experience. Specific comparative experience with criminal justice systems in Central and Eastern Europe or general comparative experience with continental criminal legal systems is desired. Proficiency in the Albanian or Serbian language would be beneficial, but is not required.
