Daily Press Briefing - October 9

Status of Hijacked Ukrainian Freighter Near Somalia Taken Question)

Question: What recent contacts/discussions have we had with Russia on the freighter?

Answer: The U.S. Government has had frequent discussions with the Governments of Ukraine, Russia, Belize, Latvia and Kenya regarding M/V FAINA. We have been in contact with Russia both in Washington and Moscow to coordinate diplomatically.

For questions on the military aspects of the issue we refer you to the Department of Defense.

Question: Media reports that Somalis and Kenyans have reached agreement on freighter. Did the US have any role in brokering an agreement?

Answer: We have not been involved in discussions between the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia (TFG) and the Government of Kenya on the M/V FAINA. We are aware of the media reports concerning a possible agreement. We suggest that you contact the TFG or the Government of Kenya for more information.
