Newly Designed recreation.gov Re-Launches for National Public Lands Day

U.S. Government Web Site Provides Citizen Access to 2,000 National Recreation Sites

Washington D.C. - Recreation.gov unveiled its newly designed Web site providing easier access to 2,000 popular national recreation sites and more comprehensive information on public lands today. Secretary Gale Norton of DOI announced the joint re-launch to help honor the nationwide celebration of National Public Lands Day at a local event in Salt Lake City, Utah.

”This is a customer-centered, easy-to-navigate Web site. People want to quickly and easily find lakes, parks, trails, museums, historic sites and other places where they may visit and have fun, not sift through multiple Web sites from different agencies. This site makes it easier for people to go from typing on their computers to engaging in the activities that they enjoy,“ said DOI Secretary Gale Norton.

”We’ve listened to feedback to create a design for Recreation.gov that is easier for visitors to use. This site now provides a quick, comprehensive resource to help U.S. citizens and tourists find out how to best experience our national parks and recreation areas,“ said Mark Forman, Associate Director for Information Technology and E-Government of the Office of Management and Budget.

The additions to Recreation.gov include a new color-coded map interface allowing visitors to search recreation areas and activities by state, more links to state tourism, environment, wildlife and volunteerism organizations, and online driving directions. The site now provides direct access to sites of related interest like Volunteer.gov, Fitness.gov, the U.S. Forest Service’s Fall Foliage Web site and the President’s Health and Fitness Initiative Homepage, HealthierUS.gov.

  • The following lists the enhancements to Recreation.gov:
    • More detailed maps
      • Local maps and driving directions to recreation sites
      • New map interface to search recreation sites by state
    • New Links and Partnerships
      • Direct access to Volunteer.gov, Fitness.gov and HealthierUS.gov
      • Additional state and local park and recreation site information for Maryland, North Dakota and Virginia
      • New links to state tourism, environmental, wildlife and recreation organizations
    • Improved E-Gov Technological Architecture
      • Enhanced data quality and reduced costs through the use of XML and web services to exchange data
      • Easier connectivity with a broader range of tourist opportunity providers is made possible with initiation of a data standard (RecML) to exchange data among a broader range of computer systems

Recreation.gov is one of 24 E-Government Initiatives, released by the Office of Management and Budget and guided by the President’s Management Council, to integrate agency operations and technology investments. E-Government is an integral part of the President’s Management Agenda to make it easier for citizens to interact with government, save taxpayer dollars and streamline business-to-government transactions.
