December 6 — 7, 2007 Advisory Committee Meeting
Minutes
Opening of Meeting
CAPT Richard Troiano, Ph.D., Executive Secretary, Physical
Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee, opened the meeting on behalf of RADM
Penelope Slade Royall, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health. CAPT Troiano welcomed
the Committee, Subcommittee consultants, CDC staff and members of the public to
the Meeting and reviewed the formation of the Physical Activity Guidelines
development process and subsequent work performed by the Advisory Committee.
The development of the Physical Activity Guidelines for
Americans was announced by Secretary Leavitt in October of 2006. They represent
one aspect of the Secretary's prevention priority, which is based on the four
pillars of the President's Healthier U.S. initiative. The four pillars include
physical activity, good diet, healthy choices and preventive screening.
The first meeting of the Advisory Committee was held on June 28
– 29, 2007 in Washington, DC. At this meeting the Advisory Committee was
officially sworn in by the Secretary. The Advisory Committee formed ten
different subcommittees in different topical areas and is supported by
consultants and CDC staff. Each subcommittee began reviewing scientific
literature relating to physical activity in their topical area. CDC staff also
responded to additional research requests from Committee members.
CAPT Troiano acknowledged the assistance of the Federal Steering
Committee, members of which include CAPT Troiano representing the Office of
Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Melissa Johnson from the President's
Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and Bill Kohl, Ph.D. and Janet Fulton
from CDC. CAPT Troiano also acknowledged the efforts of Wilma Tilson, M.P.H., from
the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, Department of
Health and Human Services.
