February 28 — 29, 2008 Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes

General Discussion

Thursday, February 28, 2:15 p.m.

Dr. Haskell called for comments from the committee on the previous subcommittee reports in a general discussion period.

Initial discussion focused on the suggested chart regarding pre-participation evaluations presented during the Adverse Events Subcommittee report. Several members expressed concern the chart suggests it is not necessary for asymptomatic/health individuals to consult with a health care provider even though there is a lack of data to suggest otherwise. More discussion centered on what it actually meant for a health care provider to develop an activity plan as well as if there was data that supported the efficacy of people at risk consulting a health care professional prior to commencing a physical activity program. Further discussion addressed whether the chart was delving into a recommendation and whether a statement should be made in this area based solely on the evidence, of which, no clear conclusion can be made. A comment was made whether pre-participation screenings are actually a barrier to physical activity or whether it presents an opportunity for the medical profession to become more educated in the area of physical activity.
