The mission of the National Security Division (NSD) is to coordinate the Department’s efforts in carrying out its top priority of preventing and combating terrorism and protecting the national security. NSD provides legal and policy advice on national security matters, litigates counterterrorism, counterespionage, and foreign intelligence surveillance matters, represents the Government before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and other federal trial and appellate courts, and conducts oversight over FBI national security investigations and foreign intelligence collection.

The incumbent of this position serves as the Director of the Office of Justice for Victims of Overseas Terrorism (OVT), National Security Division, and provides advice and counsel to the Assistant Attorney General for National Security to ensure that the investigation and prosecution of deaths of American citizens overseas due to terrorist attacks are treated as a high priority of the Department. The Director of OVT is responsible for monitoring the investigation and prosecution of terrorist attacks against Americans abroad and providing relevant information to the families of victims; working with other pertinent Justice Department components to ensure that the rights of victims of such attacks are honored and respected; establishing a Joint Task Force with the Department of State to be activated in the event of a terrorist incident against American citizens overseas; responding to Congressional and citizen inquiries on the Department’s response to such attacks; compiling pertinent data; and filing any necessary reports with Congress.

Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of a bar (of any jurisdiction), and have at least three years of post-J.D. legal experience. Applicants must have superior academic credentials and writing and analytical skills, and have a demonstrated capacity to work independently in a highly demanding environment. A working knowledge of intelligence or national security issues is desirable but not required.
