ASSISTANT UNITED STATES ATTORNEY
UNITED STATES ATTORNEY’S OFFICE
EASTERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK

About the Office: The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York (EDNY) is seeking experienced attorneys for positions as Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSA) in the Civil and Criminal Divisions. As an Assistant U.S. Attorney you would join one of the nation’s premier litigation offices representing the United States of America in three of New York City’s five boroughs -- Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island -- and all of Long Island, as well as the district’s surrounding waters. The Eastern District of New York encompasses approximately seven million people, major international air and sea ports, extraordinary commercial and cultural activity, and a diversity and vitality that makes this a unique and exciting place to live and work.

The main office of the Criminal Division is located in Brooklyn and consists of the Business and Securities Fraud Section, the Public Integrity Section, the Organized Crime and Racketeering Section, the Narcotics Section, the Violent Crimes and Terrorism Section, the General Crimes Section, and the Appeals Division. In addition, there is a Long Island Criminal Division office staffed by attorneys responsible for investigating and prosecuting the full range of federal crimes. AUSAs represent the United States in U.S. District Court for the EDNY and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. AUSAs work closely with Special Agents of all federal investigative agencies as well as detectives of the NYPD and other local and state agencies in addressing a broad spectrum of criminal activity. Traditional organized crime (“La Cosa Nostra”) is active in the New York City area, and many sections of the district are confronted with a variety of emerging organized crime groups, including Russian and Asian organized crime, as well as violent street gang activity. Narcotics trafficking, immigration fraud and smuggling are crimes generally associated with large international airports and extensive sea port facilities in densely populated and culturally diverse urban centers. AUSAs are also very active in investigating and prosecuting terrorism-related criminal activity.

The district has prosecuted a variety of sophisticated corporate and securities frauds, and the EDNY United States Attorney is one of seven U.S. Attorneys who sit on the President’s Corporate Fraud Task Force. White collar prosecutions have included elaborate money laundering and tax evasion schemes, and political corruption. The diverse nature of the criminal activity in the district also includes environmental crimes, child pornography, civil rights offenses, and firearms trafficking. The Brooklyn Criminal Division office is staffed by approximately 105 AUSAs and a number of special AUSAs. The Long Island Criminal Division is located in Central Islip, and is staffed by 14 AUSAs and one Special AUSA.

AUSAs in the Civil Division are responsible for a wide range of both affirmative and defensive civil litigation on behalf of the United States, its agencies and officials. The Civil Division has gained nationwide recognition for its affirmative and defensive work. AUSAs prosecute civil cases in such areas as asset forfeiture; environmental enforcement; defense contractor, health care and government programs fraud; financial litigation and Civil RICO. AUSAs also defend the federal government and its officials from constitutional and procedural challenges and from civil actions alleging claims in a broad spectrum of practice areas, including but not limited to, employment discrimination, torts, immigration, federal programs, and federal benefits. AUSAs represent the United States in the U.S. District and Bankruptcy Courts in the EDNY and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, as well as in New York State courts. The Civil Division has two offices, a main office located in Brooklyn, presently staffed by approximately 36 AUSAs and a number of Special AUSAs, and an office in the Central Islip, Long Island, staffed by 6 AUSAs and a number of Special AUSAs.
