About the Office: The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas, with approximately 150 Assistant United States Attorneys, is among the largest in the country. The office prosecutes federal crimes and represents the interests of the United States in civil cases. The Southern District of Texas stretches from the Houston area southwest to the Mexican border. The United States Attorney’s Office operates staffed offices in Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Houston, Laredo, McAllen, and Victoria.

Responsibilities and Opportunity Offered: The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas seeks one or more experienced attorneys to serve in the Civil Division of its Houston office. The incumbent(s) will be primarily responsible for representing the United States on a wide range of issues relating to the Border Fence project, but will also handle other affirmative and defensive civil cases as required. This is a TERM position not to exceed two (2) years. The incumbent may be considered for placement in a permanent Assistant United States Attorney position without further competition during the term of the appointment; however, placement in a permanent position is not guaranteed. The incumbent will be required to sign a statement regarding the conditions of the TERM appointment.

Qualifications: Required qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree from an accredited law school, and must be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of any state or territory of the United States or of the District of Columbia. Active bar membership (any jurisdiction) is required. Additionally, applicants must have at least three years of full-time experience as a licensed attorney.

Preferred qualifications: Hiring preferences include at least five years of civil litigation experience, preferably including litigation of land condemnation cases and oil and gas disputes. Other desirable experience includes the handling of some or all of the following types of cases: employment litigation; torts; immigration; and bankruptcy. Ideal candidates will have first-chair federal trial experience, strong academics, outstanding organizational skills, superior legal writing and research ability, and a demonstrated commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service. Spanish-language skills are useful, but not required.

Travel: Occasional travel may be required, especially to South Texas.

Salary Information: Pay for Assistant United States Attorneys is administratively determined, based in part on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $42,684 to $112,974, plus locality pay. The total starting salary, however, will not exceed $100,000 per year, including locality pay.

Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses will not be authorized.
