Welcome to the Department of Justice (DOJ) Libraries’ Internet Site. Within this site, researchers can discover the DOJ Library Staff libraries, and learn about a wealth of extraordinary resources and services available to the American public. Our primary mission is to serve Department of Justice employees. However, the Library Staff acknowledges it’s part of a larger legal information community and therefore, sharing our resources and information benefits everyone.

In 1831, under the leadership of Attorney General John M. Berrien, the Libraries were instituted. In 2006, we celebrated our 175th anniversary. The Dept. of Justice Libraries have a long and illustrious reputation as a premier law library for American law. Likewise, the Library Staff provides exceptional research services to the Department’s thousands of attorneys and legal assistants. The Library collections are extensive and rich in both American and British law.

The Libraries look to the future by expanding the Department’s access to electronically-available resources, by developing a union library catalog for the entire Department, by creating a nation-wide research assistance program for Department employees, by digitizing a number of important Department collections, and enhancing our extensive training programs. The Library Staff is dedicated to sustaining the Department’s excellent libraries, while taking advantage of new technologies and services. I am proud to say that the Department of Justice Library Staff has been and will continue being a leader in the provision of legal information and research.
