U.S. Labor Department's OSHA names Covanta Projects of Wallingford as workplace safety and health star
Fourth Covanta worksite in Connecticut to enter elite Voluntary Protection Programs

WALLINGFORD, CONN. - Covanta Projects of Wallingford, L.P. is the latest Connecticut worksite to earn entry into the prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA officials welcomed the company into the VPP in a ceremony held today at the Wallingford trash-to-energy facility.

The worksite was admitted for three year's participation at the star level, the VPP's highest level of achievement. This followed an OSHA team's weeklong onsite review, which included an examination of the facility's safety and health management system, interviews with employees and a complete tour of the plant, that found its safety and health programs consistent with the high quality expected of VPP participants.

"The star designation represents the joint commitment and follow-through of Covanta and the 35 employees at the Wallingford plant to systematically evaluate, identify and eliminate potential hazards before they affect employees," said Marthe Kent, OSHA's regional administrator.

Covanta Projects of Wallingford, L.P. now joins more than 2,030 worksites in more than 270 industries that have earned entry into the VPP. Eighteen other worksites in Connecticut are currently in the VPP, including Covanta facilities in Bristol, Hartford and Preston.

The VPP recognizes worksites that are committed to effective employee protection beyond the requirements of OSHA standards and encourages cooperative relationships among labor, management, unions and government. Through the VPP, employers and employees have experienced significant decreases in fatalities, injuries and illnesses; associated cost reductions including lowered workers' compensation expenses; positive changes in company culture and attitudes toward safety and health; and average injury rates 50 percent lower than other employers in their respective industries.

More information is available from the VPP manager in OSHA's Boston Regional Office at 617-565-9890, or online at www.osha.gov/dcsp/vpp/index.html.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees.
