"SafetyFest of the Great Northwest" Dec. 11-15 in Boise
U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA to Offer Free Safety Training in English and Spanish

BOISE, Idaho -- Free job safety training will be the focus of the second annual "SafetyFest of the Great Northwest" to be held Dec. 11-15, 2006, at the Washington Group International's Office Complex, 720 Park Blvd., Boise.

Hosting the training conference are the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Washington Group International, the Idaho Chapter of Associated General Contractors (AGC), Snake River Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers, Zurich insurance, and the Idaho Division of Professional Technical Education.

Some 500 employees and managers are expected to attend, representing diverse industries such as health care, printing, transportation and construction in Idaho and nearby states. OSHA Assistant Secretary Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. will be a featured speaker.

"SafetyFest provides a great opportunity for area employees and their supervisors to get no-cost safety and health training on a variety of topics," said Richard S. Terrill, OSHA's regional administrator in Seattle. "Training is a key component in making workplaces safer."

During the first two days, attendees can earn training certificates by attending OSHA's 10-hour courses in construction, general industry or highway construction safety. Four of the sessions will be presented in Spanish. The remaining three days will offer four-hour classes on crane safety, rigging safety, lockout/tagout, trench competence, scaffold competence, hearing conservation and sound level monitoring, accident investigation, defensive driving, fleet safety and more. The AGC will also hold two sessions of its "Focus Four" national AGC training, which was developed under an OSHA Susan Harwood training grant, and focuses on the four hazards most likely to cause employee fatalities in the construction industry.

The conference is free. Participants may attend up to seven classes during the five days. Representatives from professional safety organizations and safety equipment companies will be available in a vendor area to talk about improvements in safety equipment and best practices.

To register for the free training seminars, contact Margaret Phelps of Washington Group at (209) 386-7264 or online at margaret.phelps@wgint.com.
