CONCORD, N.H. -- Improving safety and health for construction workers in the Upper Connecticut River Valley is the goal of a newly-signed alliance among the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Dartmouth College, and the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services' Consultation Program. Under the alliance, OSHA will provide construction safety and health training on the Dartmouth College campus. The training will be open to Dartmouth College contractors and other Upper Valley employers, particularly small and independent contractors. It will focus on recognition and prevention of a variety of common construction hazards, including falls and electrical, struck-by and caught between hazards as well as lead and silica exposure. "This alliance is a new and exciting means of reaching out to the construction community in the Upper Valley," said Rosemarie Ohar, OSHA's New Hampshire area director. "Working with the college and the state, we can help contractors and workers identify and correct hazards before they hurt workers." In addition to providing training, the alliance partners will promote and encourage participation by Dartmouth College's contractors and other area contractors in OSHA's cooperative programs, such as the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), safety consultation and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). Contractors will also be encouraged to build relationships with OSHA's regional and area offices to address construction safety concerns. The alliance was signed July 8 in Concord. Signatories were Ohar; Marthe Kent, OSHA's New England regional administrator; Michael B. Blayney, Ph.D, director of environmental health and safety at Dartmouth College; and Stephen Beyer, consultation project manager for the N.H. Department of Environmental Services.
