OSHA SEEKING NOMINATIONS FOR MACOSH

WASHINGTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is seeking nominations for persons to serve on the Maritime Advisory Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (MACOSH).

MACOSH members advise the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health on issues and concerns relating to occupational safety and health for workers involved in the shipbuilding, shipbreaking, ship repair, and longshoring in the maritime industries.

The committee will consist of 15 members. Committee members will be chosen from among a cross-section of individuals who represent employers, employees, federal and state safety and health organizations, professional organizations specializing in occupational safety and health, and national standards setting groups.

Interested persons may nominate themselves or others for membership on the committee. OSHA encourages the nomination of a broad range of individuals as possible committee members. Details for the nomination procedure appear in the June 23, 2005 Federal Register.

Nominations must be postmarked by Aug. 8, 2005. Nominations may be submitted to Dorothy Dougherty, Acting Director, Directorate of Standards and Guidance, Room N 3718, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Department of Labor, 200 Constitution Ave., NW, Washington, DC. 20210.

The previous charter for MACOSH expired last month.

Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
