Louisiana Pigment Co. Achieves OSHA Recognition

WESTLAKE, La. -- The Louisiana Pigment Co., Westlake, La., has earned membership in the prestigious "Star" Voluntary Protection Program of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). A recognition ceremony was held today in Westlake.

"The Louisiana Pigment Co. has demonstrated excellence in effective safety and health management," said OSHA Regional Administrator John Miles in Dallas. "Their outstanding efforts include maintaining an injury and illness rate 64 percent below the national average for their industry."

Louisiana Pigment manufactures a titanium dioxide pigment for industrial use in primers and base coats, automotive finishes, and in coatings for the exterior of buildings. The company employs about 304 workers and about 99 contractor workers on site.

The Voluntary Protection Programs recognize and promote effective workplace safety and health management. Companies in the VPP achieve average injury rates 50 percent lower than other companies in their industry. From coast to coast, approximately 1,200 worksites representing more than 200 industries participate in the programs.

Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
