Kathy O'Connell Named New Director of OSHA's Aurora, Ill., Area Office

AURORA, Ill. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has named Kathy A. O'Connell the new area director of the agency's Aurora, Ill., office.

As area director in Aurora, she will be in charge of one of OSHA's three offices in the Chicago area and collar counties. She will be responsible for enforcing workplace safety and health standards and will work with labor and management to develop innovative approaches to eliminate workplace hazards. O'Connell will oversee an experienced staff of 22 employees.

"Kathy O'Connell will be an excellent leader for our team in Illinois. She has a solid background in safety and health matters and her expertise is well-recognized," said OSHA Regional Administrator Michael G. Connors.

Since 2000, O'Connell has served as assistant area director in the Calumet City area office where she supervised a construction team of five compliance officers. Her team is recognized throughout the Chicago area for their expertise in construction. O'Connell also supervised the whistleblower program in her office. She was an intern in the Calumet City OSHA area office in 1987 and began her career with OSHA the following year.

O'Connell is one of the original OSHA members on the planning committee for the annual conference sponsored by the Chicago Construction Safety Council. She has conducted many training sessions and spoken at national events, such as the National Safety Congress.

A native of Lansing, Ill., O'Connell earned her bachelor of science degree from Purdue University. She has completed technical courses through the OSHA Training Institute and is a certified construction safety and health technician.
