OSHA Alliance with the Delaware Safety Council, Inc.
Targets Accident Prevention for Motor Fleet Operations

WILMINGTON, Del. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Delaware Safety Council, Inc. are joining forces to promote workplace safety and health in motor fleet and forklift operations. OSHA and the Delaware Safety Council, Inc. officially launched their alliance at a signing ceremony today in Wilmington.

OSHA Health and Safety Alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. The Delaware Safety Council, Inc. is a nonprofit safety resource and training organization committed to promoting the protection of life and health on the highway and in the workplace for its 350 business members in Delaware and the Mid-Atlantic Region.

"This alliance aims to help prevent work-related transportation accidents that account for far too many fatalities and injuries each year," said Jonathan L. Snare, OSHA's acting assistant secretary, who represented the federal agency at the signing ceremony. "Together, OSHA and the Delaware Safety Council can provide the tools that workers need to stay safe when they travel on the job."

Through the alliance, OSHA and the Delaware Safety Council, Inc. will deliver training and educational programs on traffic safety and defensive driving specifically targeted to business and corporate fleet operations. The Delaware Safety Council, Inc. will also work with OSHA to develop and provide safety and health curricula on the safe operation of material handling equipment.

Since 2001, the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 300 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.

Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
