Hope Mentore-Smith

Hope’s federal career began in 1978, working for the Air Force, Army and Department of Defense between W. Germany and the United States in the disciplines of Communications and Public Affairs before beginning a career in IT as a Programmer Analyst for the National Guard Bureau in 1987. Enjoying the “people side” of IT, she moved to the General Services Administration in 1990 as a Systems Analyst providing data conversion strategies to federal agencies. Her primary focus was the preservation of historical Native American documents in digital format.

She joined the Department of Interior, National Business Center, as the Technical Implementation coordinator for the Department-Wide Acquisition System (IDEAS) in 1993 taking her to almost every Interior, Park, Area, State, and Field Office in the Continental U.S. “I really appreciate and respect the mission of Interior which makes me feel what I do is connected and worthwhile”. After 8 years of implementation activities and technical analysis, she became Branch Chief for Electronic Commerce and Technology Management responsible for Web Development and Technical Support for IDEAS as well as participating in several E-Government committees which resulted in the integration of several initiatives into the IDEAS automated suite of systems.

The accomplishment she is most proud of is her selection as the Deputy CIO for FWS because it’s a position that can affect change, make the organization effective and efficient, and foster the ability to recognize where technology can be of value to the conservation mission.

Hope is a native New Yorker who has made Northern, VA her home since 1987. She is married to Larry, a talented woodworker and telecommunications manager at GSA. Her favorite pastimes are her book club, bowling, hiking and just doing nothing in Kauai.
