CASPER, Wyo. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has recognized the U.S. Postal Service Main Post Office in Casper, Wyo., for excellence in its employee safety and health program. The post office was designated a Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) "Star" site, the highest level of recognition that OSHA's VPP offers, during a September 7 ceremony at the facility. A VPP Star site meets safety and health program elements that far exceed minimum OSHA standards. "This award recognizes world-class leadership in the area of employee safety and health programs," said Bob Glover, OSHA assistant regional administrator in Denver. Glover and Brad Baptiste, OSHA regional VPP manager, presented a VPP flag and plaque to Postal Service staff at the ceremony. According to Baptiste, among the most noteworthy aspects of the site's health and safety management system are its emergency preparedness plans and drills and its comprehensive set of written job-hazard analyses. "The Casper Post Office has an exceptional injury prevention program highlighted by the proactive manner in which they identify and eliminate work-related hazards. It is a really impressive workplace," Baptiste said. VPP offers employers a unique opportunity to move beyond traditional safety programs by recognizing participants that successfully incorporate comprehensive safety and health programs into their total management systems. The VPP program is open to deserving employers in any industry. Requirements for application to the VPP, which has approximately 1,550 sites in the country, include a high degree of management support and employee involvement, high-quality work-site hazard analysis, prevention and control programs and comprehensive safety and health training for all employees. Each of these elements must be effective, in place and in operation for at least one year before applying to join the program.
