WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Mexican Embassy today signed a Letter of Agreement that reinforces the Department of Labor's continuing efforts to ensure safe and healthful working conditions for workers from Mexico and other Latin American countries. "Hispanics are an integral part of the American workforce, and Mexican workers comprise its largest segment. This administration is committed to ensuring that they are safe on the job and fully and fairly compensated for their work," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "These agreements will build on this administration's unprecedented joint outreach program with the Mexican Embassy and its consulates in the United States." "Working with the Mexican Consulates enables us to reach more workers and employers, and achieve greater success in ensuring the health and safety of Mexican workers, than would be possible if we addressed this issue alone," added John Henshaw, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health. The OSHA agreement outlines many areas of collaboration in communication, outreach, and training to assure Mexican workers appreciate their rights for a safe and healthful work environment. In addition, the Consulates will help Mexican workers and employers understand the role OSHA plays in worker protection, enforcement, and compliance assistance. The Letter of Agreement signed today by OSHA complements a Joint Declaration between Secretary Chao and the Secretary for External Relations of Mexico, Luis Ernesto Derbez, that reaffirms the shared commitment of the United States and Mexico to improve compliance with and awareness of workplace laws and regulations protecting Mexican workers in the United States. The Wage and Hour Division also signed a Letter of Agreement that builds on ongoing cooperative efforts with the Mexican Consulate, including Houston's Justice and Equality in the Workplace Program and other similar regional initiatives launched in recent years in Dallas, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
