EL PASO, Texas -- Enhanced workplace safety for individuals between 16 and 24 years of age is the goal of a new alliance signed by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the David L. Carrasco Job Corps Center in El Paso. "This agreement provides an opportunity for OSHA and the David L. Carrasco Job Corps Center to work together in emphasizing employer awareness of hazardous working conditions for our young adults," said Richard Tapio, OSHA's area director in Lubbock, Texas. "We are hopeful that this cooperative effort will help prevent potential injuries within the various industries in which these students choose to work." The mission of the David L. Carrasco Job Corps Center, formerly known as the El Paso Job Corps Center, is to provide academic education classes and vocational training courses to young adults in a residential, tuition-free program. The alliance allows the Job Corps center to expand and enhance its training curriculum to provide fundamental safety and health awareness to students in and around the El Paso area who are embarking on careers. Job Corps, another agency of the Department of Labor, is the nation's largest and oldest federally funded job training and education program for "at promise" youth ages 16 through 24, with about 60,000 youth annually taught and trained at 122 centers nationwide. OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has more than 480 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. OSHA has improved workplace safety and health over the past 37 years. This success is reflected in the latest data (2006) showing the lowest national injury and illness incidence rate that the Bureau of Labor Statistics has ever recorded. OSHA will continue to work diligently to focus its resources where they will have the most impact in assuring that every working man and woman returns home safely every day.
