HARTFORD, Conn. -- Reducing hazards and enhancing safety and health in Hartford County's residential construction industry are the goals of a new alliance among the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Home Builders Association of Hartford County Inc. (HBA) and the Connecticut Department of Labor's Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ConnOSHA). "This alliance seeks to reach employees and employers at all levels in the area's residential construction industry and provide them with the knowledge and ability to anticipate, identify and eliminate work-related hazards," said C. William Freeman III, OSHA's area director in Hartford. The alliance partners will work together to develop training programs on reducing and preventing exposure to hazards common to residential construction, including falls, electrocution and being caught in or struck by machinery. The programs will be designed to address the needs of entry level and non-English speaking employees, skilled employees and management. Activities will include safety sessions, seminars and courses for home builders, remodelers, subcontractors and affiliates. Association members will be encouraged to participate in OSHA's cooperative programs and to build relationships with OSHA offices. "Safety and health are not just good practice, they're also good business," said Freeman. "Identifying and eliminating hazards to employees reduces occupational injuries and illnesses, and their associated costs in human and financial capital." The alliance was signed by Freeman of OSHA; Kenneth Boynton, president, HBA; and Richard Palo, director, ConnOSHA. OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative partnerships.
