U.S. Labor Department's OSHA renews alliance with American Industrial Hygiene Association, UPR Medical Sciences Campus and Puerto Rico OSHA

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today renewed its alliance with the American Industrial Hygiene Association's Puerto Rico Local Chapter, the University of Puerto Rico's Graduate School of Public Health Medical Sciences Campus and the Puerto Rico Occupational Safety and Health Administration (PR-OSHA).

The alliance was first signed in December 2004 and is designed to provide association members and others with information, guidance and access to training resources aimed at minimizing exposure to indoor air, noise and other industrial hygiene hazards. Activities include training sessions, industrial hygiene courses and the delivery of Certified Industrial Hygienist and Certified Safety Professional courses for association members, safety and health professionals, and students. In 2006, 185 individuals received information or training as a result of the alliance.

"The response to the initial alliance was very positive and this renewal displays the mutual desire of all parties to continue this effort on behalf of the employees of Puerto Rico," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator.

"One of our long-range goals is to increase the number of certified safety and health professionals in Puerto Rico who will have the knowledge and ability to help employers and employees effectively identify and eliminate workplace hazards," said José A. Carpena, OSHA's area director in Puerto Rico.

The partnership was signed by Dr. Lida Orta Anés, president of the association; Dr. José Fernando Cordero, dean of the university's Graduate School of Public Health Medical Sciences Campus; Myrna I. Vélez, acting assistant secretary of PR-OSHA; and OSHA's Patricia Clark and José Carpena.

OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has 468 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
