CHICAGO -- The Des Plaines, Ill., area office of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has signed a safety partnership with the James McHugh Construction Company and the Great Lakes U.S. Naval Facility, Navy Corps of Engineers. The partnership is aimed at eliminating serious hazards and reaching a high level of worker safety and health protection for Battle Station 21, a unique, $80 million construction project at the Great Lakes, Ill., facility. "This partnership illustrates how government and private industry can work together to serve the best interests of working people," said OSHA Regional Administrator Michael G. Connors, Chicago. "Partnerships such as this allow OSHA to work cooperatively with employers and workers who make every effort to eliminate hazards and reduce injuries." The Battle Station 21 project will consist of constructing a one square block, box-shaped building that will also contain the construction of a replica of the USS Taft battleship. The partnership seeks to greatly reduce recordable injuries or illnesses and lost work day rates. It will do this by developing a safety and health management process for the overall project and by ensuring that core elements of the safety and health program are put into action every day. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
