February 20 Initial Signing Ceremony Scheduled In Omaha OMAHA, Neb. -- Reducing workers' exposure to hazards in the contract cleaning industry for meatpacking and processing facilities is the goal of a new partnership agreement between several Nebraska companies and the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA Health and Safety partnerships are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. "This partnership will promote cooperation between OSHA and industry representatives," said Charles E. Adkins, CIH, OSHA's regional administrator in Kansas City. "Five companies will participate initially, and we encourage more contract cleaning businesses to join with us in this effort." Taking part in a partnership signing ceremony with OSHA's Omaha area office on Feb. 20 will be Mossberg Sanitation; DCS Sanitation Management, Inc.; Kaiser's Contract Cleaning Specialists, Inc.; Contract Services Limited; and National Service Company of Iowa. The companies provide cleaning services for most of Nebraska's meatpacking and processing facilities. The partnership will strive for a four percent reduction in the rate of workdays lost due to injuries or illnesses. Participating employers will receive information that helps them to develop or improve their safety and health programs and will be encouraged to take advantage of the OSHA Consultation Service of Nebraska's Workforce Development agency. Each cleaning company will create and maintain a written safety and health program, outlining elements of management's commitment and leadership, employee involvement, hazard analysis, hazard evaluation and control, and employee safety and health training. They also agree to train workers to recognize and avoid hazards, to adhere to OSHA safety and health standards and to comply with the host facility's safety and health policies.
