Highlights protecting workers from industrial hazards, including metalworking fluids WASHINGTON -- Protecting workers from industrial hazards in the manufacturing industry is the goal of an Alliance signed today by the Independent Lubricant Manufacturers Association (ILMA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). "Workers in manufacturing and other industries are exposed to a wide variety of metalworking fluids and lubricants," said OSHA Administrator John L. Henshaw. "In many cases, there are measures available to reduce possible health risks from these exposures. Working with the ILMA, we want employers and workers to adopt preventive measures that will reduce those risks." "We are proud that ILMA's Alliance with OSHA is the first in the lubricants industry," added Paul P. Converso, ILMA President. "The Alliance builds on ILMA's history of commitment to educating employees and customers on the safe handling of lubricant products." Key to the Alliance will be the development of training and education programs on the safe and proper use of lubricant products. OSHA and ILMA will provide the association's members and others with information, guidance and access to training resources on the hazards of working with metalworking fluids, as well as other industrial hazards in manufacturing environments. The Alliance promotes the cross-training of OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals in best practices or other effective approaches, as jointly determined by OSHA and ILMA. It also calls for information sharing on best practices in lubricant manufacturing with others in the industry and promotes awareness of the hazards through ILMA's product stewardship program LubeCare®. OSHA and ILMA will also develop and disseminate information through print and electronic media, including electronic assistance tools and links from the organization's respective websites. Both organizations will pursue opportunities to speak, exhibit, or appear at conferences and other events such as ILMA's Spring Management Forum, its Fall Annual Meeting, and LubeCare® workshops. OSHA and ILMA will also participate in forums, roundtable discussions and stakeholder meetings on lubricant issues that can help forge innovative solutions in the workplace. ILMA provides guidance regarding existing and emerging safety and health issues related to the lubricants industry and their impact on ILMA members and end users. Association members are independent lubricant companies that produce more than 25 percent of the lubricants, and about 80 percent of the metalworking fluids and other specialty industrial lubricants sold in the United States.
