HARRISON NAMED SAVANNAH AREA DIRECTOR FOR U.S. LABOR DEPARTMENT'S OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION

Teresa A. Harrison has been appointed area director for OSHA's Savannah area office by the U.S. Department of Labor. Prior to her selection, she served as the assistant area director in Jacksonville, Fla.

In 1988, Harrison began her career with OSHA, serving as an industrial hygienist in the St. Louis, Mo., and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., area offices. In 1994 she was promoted to the assistant area director for safety in St. Louis. She moved to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1996, as the assistant area director for industrial hygiene and in 1998 was designated the assistant area director for strategic planning. During this period she was the coordinator for the construction accident reduction emphasis program (CARE) in Florida.

"Terri is a valuable asset to the agency," said Cindy Coe, OSHA's regional administrator, Atlanta. "Employers and employees will benefit from her proven managerial skills and strong background in both the safety and health disciplines."

Harrison received the Labor Secretary's Exceptional Achievement Award in 1999, and the OSHA Assistant Secretary Team Impact Award in 1995, 1996 and 1999 for her significant contributions to improving worker safety and health. She was recognized for her leadership ability regionally in 1996 and nationally in 1997.

Harrison earned a bachelor of science degree in animal science from the University of Southern Illinois, Carbondale, Ill., and a master's degree in environmental science from the University of Southern Illinois, Edwardsville, Ill.

As the Savannah area director, Harrison will be responsible for administering the federal Occupational Safety and Health Act in 73 South Georgia counties.
