Alliance Signing Ceremony Scheduled for Friday, May 27, in Savannah SAVANNAH -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) office in Savannah, the Savannah Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) and the Georgia Institute of Technology, Safety, Health and Environmental Technology Division (Georgia Tech) are forming a Trench Safety Task Force Alliance to protect workers during trenching operations. "Over the past five years, OSHA has investigated 12 fatal trenching accidents in Georgia," said John J. Deifer, OSHA's Savannah area director. "Safe work practices could have prevented these tragedies." Deifer added that major area construction companies have indicated support for the alliance. The alliance is part of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve worker safety and health through cooperative programs with employers, labor and trade organizations, and community groups.
This trench safety task force expands an alliance originally signed on Oct. 22, 2004, by two metro Atlanta OSHA area offices, Georgia Tech and the Georgia Chapter of the ASSE. Both agreements focus on developing material for construction employers and employees that highlights "best practices" to reduce safety hazards during trenching and excavation operations. Since 2001, the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 325 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
