NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has signed two site-safety and health construction partnerships with Plaza Construction Company to reduce serious hazards and achieve a high level of worker safety and health at two major New York City construction projects -- the West 60th. St. Realty Properties LLC and Columbus Ave. Construction Project in Manhattan and The Shops at Atlas Park, 800 Cooper Ave. in Queens. The West 60th St. project is an 18-story mixed-use building that will house Torro College and 80 residential units while the Queens project includes a shopping complex with four two-story buildings, the 2.5 acre Ellipse Park and a pavilion. Both projects are scheduled for completion in the first half of 2006. "This is a historic day for OSHA in New York because we are, for the first time, simultaneously signing two safety and health partnerships with the same contracting company," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator. "These are our first partnerships with Plaza and we hope there will be many more." The partnership's goals include encouraging the projects' construction subcontractors to improve their safety and health performance; assisting them in meeting stringent safety and health objectives; implementing strategies to reduce serious accidents, including the four primary construction hazards (falls, electrical, caught in/between and struck-by); increasing employee safety and health training; and recognizing subcontractors with exemplary safety and health programs. "These two projects combined will impact over 60 subcontractors who will become more aware of OSHA outreach capabilities and be able to better safeguard the health and safety of their employees," said Clark. Signatories for OSHA were Patricia K. Clark, regional administrator; Richard Mendelson, acting deputy regional administrator; and Manhattan acting area director Kay Gee. Signing for Plaza Construction Company were Michael Halloway, project executive, and Mary Ellen Sachetti, safety director. Also signing were James Rush for the New York State Department of Labor On-Site Consultation Program; Louis Coletti, chairman and CEO, Building Trades Employers Association; and Edward Malloy, president, Building and Construction Trades Council. OSHA Strategic Partnerships for Worker Safety and Health are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative relationships with groups including trade associations, labor organizations, and employers. Since its Strategic Partnership Program began in 1998, OSHA has formed more than 300 partnerships, impacting over 13,000 employers and 573,000 employees across the United States.
