Promote Worker Safety and Health NEW YORK -- Employees working on the Trump Riverside South construction project should have a safer workplace under a comprehensive site safety and health partnership agreement signed today by the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety & Health Administration, HRH Construction LLC, the Building and Construction Trades Council and the Building Trades Employers Association. OSHA Health and Safety partnerships are part of Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships of labor unions and employers. "The Department of Labor is focused on the health and safety of workers and partnerships, like this OSHA partnership, are a valuable tool for the department, workers and employers to help reduce injuries and illnesses at the worksite," said R. Davis Layne, deputy assistant secretary for occupational safety and health. The goals of the partnership include encouraging construction subcontractors working on the project to improve their safety and health performance, helping them meet a comprehensive list of safety, health and environmental objectives, striving to eliminate serious accidents, increasing employee training and recognizing subcontractors with exemplary safety and health programs. The project, a 32-story residential and retail facility at 240 Riverside Boulevard on Manhattan's West Side, began in January 2003 with completion expected in December 2004. At its peak, HRH Construction, the project's construction management contractor, expects to employ more than 30 subcontractors. This will provide an opportunity to promote a workplace safety and health culture to a wide variety of building trades. Partnership agreements such as this encourage contractors to be more involved in the management of safety and health for their employees, and allow OSHA to offer incentives for increasing emphasis on employee safety and health issues. This includes training or other assistance with safety and industrial hygiene concerns provided by OSHA compliance assistance specialists. The partnership also allows the prime contractor to assist its subcontractors in improving their safety and health programs. However, the partnership does not preclude OSHA from addressing complaints, fatalities, serious accidents, nor does it infringe on the rights of employees to report workplace hazards.
