OSHA Forms Alliance with Abbott Laboratories
Will focus on increasing safety and health training resources for the health care industry

WASHINGTON -- Abbott Laboratories today joined with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to advance safety and health for workers throughout the health care industry.

Abbott signed an Alliance with OSHA during the National Safety Congress and Exposition in Chicago, beginning a collaborative effort to improve safety and health for workers throughout the health care and pharmaceutical industries.

"We welcome the expertise and knowledge that Abbott Laboratories brings to help ensure that workers in the health care and pharmaceutical arena will have safe and healthful workplaces," said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "The results of this Alliance will touch thousands of workers in the industry and we're pleased that Abbott has joined with us in this important effort."

"We are pleased and proud to be the first company in the pharmaceutical and health care industries to join in an Alliance with OSHA," added Robert D. Morrison, divisional vice president, Corporate Environmental Health and Safety for Abbott Laboratories. "The Alliance builds on Abbott's history of commitment to the safety and well-being of our employees, customers and communities in which we operate."

The Alliance calls for the development of information and increased access to training resources. OSHA and Abbott Laboratories will work with business schools to develop and integrate safety and health presentations and business case study materials into MBA-level and executive education seminars. Also, materials that communicate the business value of comprehensive workplace safety and health programs will be developed for inclusion in business school curricula.

Representatives of OSHA and Abbott will participate in forums, roundtable discussions, or stakeholder meetings on health care industry workplace safety and health challenges, and will also speak, exhibit or appear at conferences or at other industry events.

The Alliance also provides OSHA and Abbott with the opportunity to work with stakeholders in the nursing home community to develop practical programs and processes for reducing injuries and illnesses. Finally, both organizations will work with other Alliance participants on specific issues related to the development of safety and health business case studies.

Abbott Laboratories is a global, broad-based health care company devoted to the discovery, development, manufacture and marketing of pharmaceuticals, nutritionals and medical products, including devices and diagnostics. The company employs more than 70,000 people.

OSHA also entered into Alliances with the National Safety Council and the International Safety Equipment Association at the National Safety Congress.

OSHA is dedicated to assuring worker safety and health. Safety and health add value to business, the workplace and life. For more information, visit www.osha.gov.
