First Philadelphia Construction Site in OSHA's "VPP" PHILADELPHIA -- The construction site of the University of Pennsylvania Hospital renovation project, managed by L.F. Driscoll Company, Bala Cynwyd, Pa., today joined the prestigious "Star" Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration. OSHA recognized the site during a ceremony at which Regional Administrator Richard D. Soltan presented a VPP flag to the company. "L.F. Driscoll Company has set the standard for other Philadelphia construction companies," said Soltan. "The company's commitment to safety and health for employees and the Philadelphia building trades extends from senior project managers through the first-line field supervisors." L.F. Driscoll is the prime builder for the hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The construction site, on 6.5 acres in West Philadelphia, involves renovations of 52,000 square feet in eight different areas. The project is expected to last two years. The site is noted for having an injury and illness rate 41 percent below the construction industry average. Approximately 120 workers are onsite. "This achievement is the pinnacle of a ten-year quest by L. F. Driscoll Company's safety department to be recognized for exemplary safety management systems," said Dona File, L.F. Driscoll Company's director of corporate safety. OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs promote effective worksite-based safety and health. In the VPP, management, labor, and OSHA establish cooperative relationships at workplaces that have implemented a comprehensive safety and health management system. Companies that have been accepted into the Voluntary Protection Programs represent more than 280 industries. From coast to coast, approximately1,300 work sites have earned membership in the program. Employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's workers by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
