More than 220 students have completed construction safety course NEW YORK -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Alfred E. Smith Career and Technical Education High School in the Bronx and the New York State Labor Department's On-Site Consultation Program have renewed their innovative alliance to provide tomorrow's construction employees with the most valuable tool of all: the knowledge to spot and prevent on-the-job hazards. Under the alliance, more than 220 students in the school's construction trades program have completed OSHA's 10-hour construction safety course. The course provides them with a thorough grounding in construction safety and health, with a focus on identifying and addressing major construction hazards. In addition, six of the school's instructors are currently completing OSHA's train-the-trainer course. This will qualify them to present the 10-hour course to students in the future. "We're pleased with the success of this alliance, and the enthusiasm and participation of the students and faculty," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator in New York. "This training is a promising investment in tomorrow's workforce that will pay dividends in safer workplaces, fewer injuries and illnesses, and increased productivity." "The marvelous thing about this alliance is that it's building on itself and spreading far beyond the classroom," said Diana Cortez, director of OSHA's area office in Tarrytown, N.Y., which oversees the Bronx. "Not only are students putting this important safety knowledge into practice in the work world, the training itself has helped some of them gain employment." The alliance renewal was signed April 23 at the school by its principal, Renee Casanova, and assistant principal, Rafael Guzman; by James Rush, manager, New York State Labor Department's On-Site Consultation Program; and by OSHA's Patricia K. OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships. OSHA currently has 468 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees.
