U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA Forms Partnership with Illinois-based Builders Association Inc.
Reducing work-related injuries and fatalities is top priority of partnership

CHICAGO -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has formed a health and safety partnership with Chicago-based Builders Association Inc. The association is committed to providing a safer working environment for all employees and achieving a reduction in injuries, illnesses and fatalities in the Illinois construction industry by sharing knowledge of industry best practices.

"This agreement provides an opportunity for the partners to come together and demonstrate that we all benefit when management, labor and government dedicate themselves to providing a safe and healthful work environment," said Diane Turek, OSHA area director for Northern Chicago. "We want every employee to go home healthy and uninjured at the end of the day."

The Builders Association serves the commercial construction industry in the Chicago area. Its 100 members come from the leading contractors and suppliers from around the Chicago construction industry. Their general contractor members range from large national firms to smaller specialized companies that build private and public projects worth more than $4 billion annually.

The participants in this partnership will work to reduce by three percent annually serious injuries and illnesses of all employees at work sites in Illinois, increase the number of safety and health programs among contractors and subcontractors and create a working relationship that focuses on preventing work-related fatalities.

OSHA's Strategic Partnership Program is part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and employees. More than one-million employees and more than 33,000 employers across the United States have participated with OSHA in more than 440 strategic partnerships since the program began in 1998. OSHA's area office in Des Plaines, Ill., is working on the formation of this partnership.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
