BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Employees of more than 300 upstate and western New York automotive dealerships can benefit from a new alliance forged by the Buffalo area office of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Niagara Frontier Automobile Dealers Association (NFADA) and the Rochester Automobile Dealers Association (RADA). "This alliance is far-reaching and ambitious, engaging dealerships from Binghamton to Buffalo, Rochester to Niagara Falls," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator. "Through it, we will work with NFADA and RADA to develop training and education programs addressing the types of hazards their workers may encounter on the job." "This joint effort will equip dealers and their employees with knowledge and skills to identify and prevent common workplace hazards before they hurt workers," said Art Dube, OSHA's area director in Buffalo. "It will also encompass the next generation of workers by reaching out to students in the region's vocational schools." Under the alliance, NFADA and RADA members will receive OSHA's 10- or 30-hour general industry safety courses. Training will address hazards associated with paint spray operations, brake and clutch inspection and repair, combustible materials, welding and cutting operations and work with and beneath auto lifts. Training will also be provided to students in automotive repair and maintenance curriculums in area vocational schools. NFADA and RADA members will be encouraged to participate in OSHA's cooperative programs and build relationships with OSHA and the state consultation service to address safety and health issues. The alliance was signed by Clark and Dube; NFADA president Paul Stasiak; and John Lyboldt, president of RADA. OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has 441 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees.
