U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA Offers Free Spanish Language Construction Safety Course Oct. 29 in Riverhead, N.Y.

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Long Island Power Authority, AGMAUSA and North Fork Spanish Apostolate will present a free, course in Spanish on construction safety and health on Sunday, Oct. 29. The course will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., at St. John the Evangelist Church (Iglesia San Juan El Evangelista), Roanoke Ave. and Fifth St. in Riverhead, N.Y.

The course will help Hispanic workers identify and prevent common workplace hazards. It will include instruction about fall protection, excavation safety, electrical hazards, scaffolds, ladders, hand and power tools, hazard communication, industrial hygiene and fire protection. Workers will learn about their right to a safe and healthful workplace and how to contact OSHA.

Representatives from Werner Bread Products of Long Island, the Metro Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers and Orange and Rockland Utilities will also participate and provide assistance with the training.

The emphasis will be on hands-on training. Workers will handle equipment and tools as they learn correct methods of working safely. A presentation by Orange and Rockland Utilities will cover hazards of overhead power lines, with a live simulation of what happens when the human body comes in contact with an energized line. A miniature tubular welded scaffold will be used for training in scaffold safety.
