GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Department of Professional Development and Continued Education of the Professional College of Engineers and Land Surveyors of Puerto Rico (CIAPR) have renewed their alliance to reduce and prevent workplace hazards for construction workers in Puerto Rico. First signed in 2004, the alliance has provided CIAPR members and others with information, guidance and training to help them protect employees against the major causes of injuries in construction work: hazards such as falls, electrical, struck-by and caught in/between. "The results of this alliance have been impressive," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator in New York. "In the past two years, more than 500 professional engineers, engineers-in-training and other construction personnel have received training on fall protection, excavation safety, scaffolding and other important safety topics. In addition, the Civil Engineers Institute of the CIAPR has presented OSHA's 30-hour construction course to 28 of its members." "This training equips these professionals with knowledge to identify and eliminate hazards before they harm workers," said Jose Carpena, OSHA's area director for Puerto Rico. "This can result in safer and healthier workplaces and a reduction in the human and financial costs of workplace injuries." The renewal was signed by Clark; Carpena; CIAPR President Eng. Roberto Rexach Cintrón; CIAPR Executive Director Eng. Rodolfo Mangual; and Magal González Figueroa, director of the CIAPR's Department of Professional Education. OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing effort to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. Since 2001, OSHA has created more than 453 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. The CIAPR is a not-for-profit, quasi-public corporation that defends and promotes the development of the engineering and land-surveying professions by promoting the excellence and ethics of its members, as well as the development of the infrastructure for the best quality of life.
