BRONX, N.Y. -- Improving safety and health for young workers in the Bronx is the goal of a newly signed alliance between the Tarrytown office of the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Alfred E. Smith Career and Technical Education High School (AES). AES offers college preparation training as well as training for employment in the building, automotive and pre-engineering trades to approximately 1100 students in grades 9 through 12. This integrated program results in a Regent's Diploma with a vocational endorsement. The alliance with OSHA will add professional safety and health resources to AES' career preparation services. Students will learn about workplace safety and health through 10-hour construction and general industry safety and health courses presented by safety and health professionals. Covered topics include fall protection, excavation safety, hand and power tools, scaffolding and hazard communication. Students will receive certification upon successful course completion. OSHA will also train and certify AES instructors as 10-hour construction and general industry safety and health course trainers. "This groundbreaking program is OSHA's first alliance in New York providing training to both students and instructors," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator. "Our goal is for these young people to enter the world of work with the skills and knowledge to help them remain safe and healthy in the workplace." "The initial response is promising," said Diana Cortez, director of OSHA's Tarrytown Area Office. "Fifty students have already completed the 10-hour construction course and their participation was enthusiastic and exceptional." Signing the alliance were Clark, Cortez, Renee Casanova, principal, and Rafael Guzman, assistant principal, Alfred E. Smith Career and Technical Education High School.
