For Excellence in Occupational Safety and Health GRAFTON, ND. -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recognized Marvin Windows and Doors for achievement in employee safety and health at a ceremony today at the company's Grafton plant. The window and door manufacturer was designated a VPP "Star" site, the highest level of recognition in OSHA's prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). VPP Star site maintains employee injury and illness rates below the national average for their industry and meets all safety and health program elements for the VPP programs, which far exceed minimum OSHA standards. Bruce Beelman, OSHA area director, noted that, "This VPP award recognizes Marvin's commitment to continual improvement. They had previously received the VPP Merit award and, in a short time, were able to qualify at the Star level. It's a tremendous accomplishment." Brad Baptiste, OSHA VPP manager in Denver, along with Beelman, presented a VPP flag and plaque to the Marvin plant manager at the ceremony. Marvin's safety and health program displays many "best practices. The site has an advanced preventive maintenance program, active employee involvement systems, and innovative forklift training. VPP offers employers a unique opportunity to move beyond traditional safety programs by recognizing participants who successfully incorporate comprehensive safety and health programs into their total management systems. The VPP programs are open to deserving employers in any industry. Approximately 1,200 VPP work sites throughout the United States have earned VPP membership. Requirements for application include a high degree of management support and employee involvement, a high-quality worksite hazard analysis, prevention and control programs and comprehensive safety and health training for all employees. Each of these elements must be effective, in place and in operation for at least one year before applying to join the program.
