Safety & Health Training to Hispanic Workers in Western New York BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Ensuring that western New York's Hispanic workers come home safely at the end of the workday is the goal of a new alliance among the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Hispanos Unidos de Buffalo, Inc. (HUB) and the New York State Department of Labor. OSHA health and safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships. "We will reach out to build trust, raise awareness and educate employers and workers about safety and health," said Patricia Clark, OSHA's regional administrator. "We recognize the value of a collaborative relationship in achieving these goals." Nationally, job-related fatalities among Hispanic workers declined by six percent last year, continuing a downward trend that began in 2002. Among foreign-born Hispanics, there was a 10 percent decrease in fatal work injuries in 2003. The alliance calls for OSHA to deliver its 10-hour construction and general industry courses in Spanish and English to Hispanic employers and workers; develop programs for HUB members about hazards; and encourage bi-lingual individuals to take the OSHA 30-hour construction or general industry "train the trainer" courses to qualify to teach Hispanic workers. HUB members will be encouraged to participate in other OSHA programs that promote job safety and health. In addition to Clark, the alliance was signed by Arthur Dube, OSHA's Buffalo area director; Paula Alcala-Rosner, executive director of Hispanos Unidos de Buffalo, Inc.; and Greg Conrad, supervising safety and health inspector with the Consultation Program of the New York State Department of Labor. HUB, Inc. is a non-profit corporation providing bilingual, bicultural assistance in a culturally appropriate setting to thousands of clients each year. The multi-service corporation was founded in 1989 to enhance the quality and number of services to western New York's burgeoning Hispanic/Latino population. The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 230 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
