New OSHA Partnership Formed to Protect Construction Workers in New Jersey

Atlantic City, N.J. -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is teaming up with the Utility and Transportation Contractors Association of New Jersey (UTCANJ) and the construction trades to help New Jersey construction workers come home safely at the end of the workday. The partnership is available to all heavy-highway, marine, utility and environmental remediation contracting firms that are members of the association.

The goal of the alliance is to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities by 4 % annually; give contractors incentives to participate and tools to measure their own safety programs and performances; decrease workers compensation costs; increase the number of contractors who implement effective safety and health programs; and provide training to management, supervisors and workers.

"This is an innovative new venture for New Jersey's construction industry," said Patricia Clark, regional administrator of OSHA in New York which covers New Jersey. "We hope that contractors are chosen for jobs who are participants in the program and because they have demonstrated a commitment to safety and health."

The partnership will be signed during a special ceremony on Sept. 18, 2004 at the Tropicana Hotel in Atlantic City where UTCA is holding their annual conference.

Note: The media is invited to attend the signing ceremony, which will begin at 9:00 a.m.
