Region 2 News Release: 04-1858-NEW (osha 04-129) Date: Sept. 30, 2004 Contact: Leni Uddyback-Fortson Phone: (215) 861-5102 OSHA Launches Alliance with Korean Cleaners Association of New Jersey to Protect Workers AVENEL, N.J. -- Protecting workers from the hazards common to the dry cleaning industry is the focus of a new alliance recently formed by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the New Jersey Department of Labor (NJDOL) and the Korean Cleaners Association of New Jersey (KCANJ). OSHA Health and Safety alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. A major goal of the alliance is to raise awareness of safety and health principles in the dry cleaning industry. The Korean Cleaners Association works to educate its 1,200 members about the laws and regulations with which they are required to comply. Participating OSHA offices are in Avenel, Hasbrouck Heights, Marlton and Parsippany. Through the statewide alliance, OSHA, NJDOL and KCANJ will develop training and education programs for KCANJ members and others on chemical, fire and ergonomic hazards. They will disseminate safety and health training resources and related materials in Korean and Spanish to dry cleaning employers and their employees not fluent in English and they will develop information on recognizing and preventing workplace hazards and will communicate the information to employers and employees in the industry. Alliance members will also identify and share information regarding KCANJ best practices or effective approaches, and they will encourage KCANJ members or worksites to take part in OSHA's cooperative programs such as compliance assistance, the Voluntary Protection Program, Consultation, and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program. "It is important to provide employers in this industry with the safety and health information needed to ensure safe work environments for their employees," says OSHA Regional Administrator Patricia K. Clark. "We look forward to working cooperatively with KCANJ and NJDOL to help keep workers safe while working at dry cleaners." Since 2001, the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has created more than 150 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
