OSHA and Kansas City Power & Light Join Forces To Promote Improved Worker Safety

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Promoting and maintaining safer and more healthful workplaces for employees in the local telecommunication service installation industry is the purpose of a newly formed alliance between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Kansas City Power & Light Company (KCPL).

A signing ceremony to confirm the alliance is scheduled for July 8 in Kansas City.

"This alliance is an outstanding example of the benefits that can be achieved through collaborative efforts," said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "The joint efforts between OSHA and Kansas City Power & Light will create a culture of safety for workers through the exchange of technical knowledge and best practices."

OSHA Regional Administrator Charles E. Adkins, OSHA's regional administrator in Kansas City, said telecommunication service contractors will receive information and guidance to promote and encourage worker safety and health particularly in preventing worker exposure to overhead power line hazards.

OSHA and KCPL will work together to develop outreach and communication goals. Activities will include creating an information packet of safety and health information directly related to telecommunications service installation work and hosting information sharing sessions, training programs and conferences with other industry representatives.

An implementation team with representatives from both organizations will develop a plan of action, determine working procedures, and identify roles and responsibilities for the alliance participants. The agreement will remain in effect for one year.

Additional information about the alliance may be obtained by contacting the OSHA area office in Kansas City at 816-483-9531 or the Public Affairs Office at 816-426-5491.

OSHA is dedicated to assuring worker safety and health. Safety and health add value to business, the workplace and life. For more information, visit www.osha.gov.
