SEATTLE -- The Seattle regional office of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Associated General Contractors of Washington have formed an alliance to promote safer and more healthful working conditions for construction workers. "We can accomplish a great deal to improve workers' well being by joining with our partners in Washington state's construction industry," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "This alliance is an excellent example of the Labor Department's commitment to provide useful and timely assistance to America's employers and workers." OSHA Regional Administrator Richard Terrill said the alliance will improve construction site safety and communication between OSHA and the industry. "It will enhance the expertise of OSHA's compliance officers and foster a national dialogue on construction safety and health," Terrill said. Roland W. Dewhurst, chief executive officer of AGC of Washington, endorsed the alliance. "The alliance will enable AGC to provide members with information and guidance that will help them protect employees' safety and health, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to construction safety and health hazards. While Washington state has its own safety rules, this alliance is important for those contractors working under federal jurisdiction," said Dewhurst. OSHA and AGC will develop training and education programs in the areas of hazard recognition, management systems and health hazards. In addition, AGC will invite OSHA officials to construction sites to observe best practices, cross-train OSHA personnel and industry safety and health practitioners in AGC's best practices or effective approaches, and encourage AGC members to take part in OSHA's cooperative programs such as the Voluntary Protection Program and Partnerships. To promote discussions on workplace safety and health, the AGC and OSHA's Seattle office will share information, convene forums on injury and illness trends and develop models OSHA can incorporate as industry recommendations. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is dedicated to saving lives, preventing injuries and illnesses and protecting America's workers.
