Taken Question Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC October 2, 2007 Daily Press Briefing for October 2, 2007 Burma: Contact with the Regime (Taken Question)Question: Has there been any contact between the Charge d'Affaires or any other officials at Embassy Rangoon with authorities in Burma? If so, who have Embassy officials been speaking to and what has been the outcome of their discussions?
Answer: The U.S. Charge d'Affaires met with Burmese Foreign Minister Nyan Win in July. She submitted requests for meetings with several other Ministers in August and has not yet received any reply. Burma's senior leaders rarely meet with foreign diplomats. Since the regime relocated most government offices to the remote town of Nay Pyi Taw it has become more difficult for diplomatic missions to obtain meetings with Burmese officials. U.S. Embassy staff regularly interact with working level Burmese officials based in Rangoon. 2007/839 |
