Question taken at Daily Briefing of Sept. 18, 2008.

American Citizen Among Fatalities in Terrorist Attack in Yemen (Taken Question)

Question: Can you confirm that an American citizen was among the victims of the September 17 terrorist attack on the U.S. Embassy in Sana’a, Yemen? Do you have information about other victims?

Answer: We can confirm that Susan Elbaneh, an American citizen, was killed in the September 17 terrorist attack on U.S. Embassy Sana’a. Preliminary information suggests that she was at the Embassy with her husband, Abdul Aljabri, and her sister-in-law. Her husband also died in the attack, and her sister-in-law was injured.

U.S. and Yemeni authorities continue to investigate the incident. Preliminary information suggests that as many as 17 persons died and several more were injured in the incident. Other than Mrs. Elbaneh, we have no reports of other American casualties. We do not have information on the nationality of other victims.
