U.S. Department of State Hosts North American Pollinator Protection CampaignThe U.S. Department of State will host the eighth annual North American Pollinator Protection Campaign Conference (NAPPC) October 23-24, 2008. The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Jose Sarukhan Kermez, renowned Mexican ecologist, at 11:00 a.m. on October 23. Other conference highlights include discussions on the implementation of the North American Monarch Conservation Plan, and an update with noted scientists from U.S. Department of Agriculture and NAPPC’s Honey Bee Health task force about recent progress, including research on colony collapse disorder. The opening plenary sessions will take place on Thursday, October 23, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. All events will take place in the Department of State’s East Auditorium.
Scientists, government policy makers and representatives from universities, non-governmental organizations, associations and industry from Canada, Mexico, and the United States will attend the meeting and create specific action plans to counter the decline in commercial and native pollinators. The conference will focus on issues such as bee science, pollinators’ importance to food security, and conservation outreach to key stakeholders in agriculture, public land managers and gardens.

Media representatives planning to attend this event should present one of the following: (1) a U.S. Government-issued media identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification (driver's license or passport).
