Under Secretary of State R. Nicholas Burns to Welcome The U.S. – Pakistan Education Dialogue Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs R. Nicholas Burns will welcome the American and Pakistani delegations to the first meeting of the U.S.- Pakistan Education Dialogue on November 29, 2006, at the U.S. Department of State. He will be joined by U.S. Secretary for Education Margaret Spellings and Pakistani Minister of Education Javed Ashraf.
This is the first U.S.- Pakistan Education Dialogue meeting in a series to address cooperation and mutual concerns in public education reform. This meeting focuses on literacy, teacher training, school improvements, parental involvement, and education for twenty first century workforce needs.
The United States has made a serious financial and policy commitment to help Pakistan address the needs of its public education system and to expand and enhance educational, cultural, and exchange opportunities for Pakistani youth and working professionals. The Government of Pakistan is committing to reforming its education system, and aims to increase funding for education to 4% of its GDP in the near future.
