Press Statement Richard Boucher, Spokesman Washington, DC November 26, 2001
Results of Honduran Presidential Election The United States applauds the people of Honduras for again demonstrating their unwavering commitment to democracy through the exercise of free and fair elections on November 25.
The United States congratulates Ricardo Maduro on his election as President of Honduras.
Our nations’ historically close relationship has broadened and deepened over the past four years during the administration of President Carlos Flores, whose outstanding leadership has guided Honduras through one of its most difficult periods. We look forward to continuing close ties with Honduras’s new administration, cooperating on mutual interests such as strengthening democracy and the rule of law, fighting terrorism and other international crimes, and fostering investment as well as poverty reduction. We are confident that President-elect Maduro’s commitment to democracy, his interest in health and educational reform, his stance on common crime, and his extensive professional experience as an international businessman and former president of Honduras’s Central Bank, will help his country address the challenges that lie ahead for Honduras.
