WASHINGTON -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Integrated Waste Services Association (IWSA) renewed their Alliance, originally signed on October 13, 2005, to continue providing IWSA's members, small businesses and others with information and training resources to protect the safety and health of employees in the municipal solid waste industry. The Alliance will focus on hauler safety, as it promotes the annual Hauler Safety Campaign: "Safety - Do It for Life." OSHA and IWSA will also work cooperatively to reduce and prevent exposure to electrical hazards in waste-to-energy facilities. "Our efforts to encourage safety and health among employees in the solid waste services industry have yielded significant results," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. "The Alliance will continue moving forward as we provide resources and sponsor events to help equip employers and employees with the knowledge, skills and ability to identify and abate workplace hazards." In the past two years, the Alliance developed a Hauler Safety Campaign entitled, "Safety - Do It for Life," and created marketing and promotional materials that were distributed at the kick-off events in 2006 and 2007. In addition, OSHA staff participated in the North American Waste-to-Energy Conference and representatives of the Alliance spoke at workshops at the 22nd and 23rd Annual National Voluntary Protection Programs Participants' Association Conferences. The workshops featured information on the Alliance and its activities. "Today's renewal of the Alliance agreement ensures that IWSA and OSHA will continue the important work of promoting safety and preventing injuries for all those who conduct business at waste-to-energy facilities," said Mark Weidman, president of Wheelabrator Technologies Inc. "This industry has made an important commitment to the hauler safety campaign which serves as a valuable tool in our efforts to provide an unsurpassed level of safety for our employees, customers, and visitors," said Seth Myones, senior vice president of Covanta Energy Company. "Renewing our Alliance is a natural extension of the positive cooperative relationship that our industry has developed with OSHA," said Steve Passage, president of Veolia ES Waste-to-Energy Inc. "We look forward to continuing the strong ties that we have formed through this Alliance for years to come." "The IWSA-OSHA Alliance is a great example of a public-private partnership that achieves success through cooperation," said Ted Michaels, president of IWSA. "IWSA and its members are proud to renew this Alliance with OSHA." IWSA, formed in 1991, represents more than 50 members who own and/or operate over 60 waste-to-energy plants and the 28 municipalities that are served by them. Members also include several affiliate organizations that work in the municipal waste management and energy fields. Through its members and affiliates, the association works to safely dispose of municipal solid waste while producing renewable electricity using modern combustion technology. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees.
